It's Saturday morning March 15th.... I am having espresso withdrawal. I dig in my kitchen cupboard and dig out my old espresso pot. I add my imported Italian espresso coffee and add water. I boil it on the stove and when it's ready I pour three cups. Hot, fragrant and steaming. There is one problem though. Where are the boys? Where are Harriet and Godric? Where is the Ponte Vecchio?

We are all home now. Safe and sound. The trip has surpassed all our expectations. From the departure March 4th to our return March 14th everything was perfect. Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed every moment. The economy in Italy is sure to change without our boys buying up all the Gelato and paninni's. Sorry Italy, you will have to manage without us for a while.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this incredible journey. Our boys where ambassadors of Canada and Crescent School. Our teachers provided love and support to all the students. Rene, our tour guide was an inspiration to everyone. Sal our bus driver brought us to and from every location with expertise. Mike and Karen, our tour operator's designed a trip of a life time.

Grazie, Grazie, Grazie......Ciao Italia!

Day 9...What a trip... Ciao Italia!

Day nine… About one year ago the thought of the last day of our trip was so far away. Now, at 11 PM March 13th in Rome we are all packing for the trip home. I know by the comments you sent to the blog, you have watched us throughout our journey. I can tell you it has been a trip of a life time. The things we saw, experienced, ate and enjoyed can been seen in the pictures and read about on the blog. I am sure we ate Italy out of Gelato, pasta and pizza. We had a special session at our last dinner on how to explain to immigrations the amount in Canadian dollars of gifts we are bringing home to our families.

This trip has exceeded all or expectations. The concerts, the art, the drama, have all been extraordinary. The food, the bus driver, our guide the hotels, everything! Absolutely everything.

Unfortunately all great things must come to an end. As we said at dinner tonight, the trip is over but the memories will last forever.

Thank you for trusting us with your sons. Thank you for allowing us to share this life changing experience with them.

This is my last post while in Italy. We hope you have enjoyed the blog and have experienced a little of what we have.

Day 8 - So sorry, we are staying...

…the opening of our shutters to welcome the day at our villa was fantastic: no rain just sunshine! The boys enjoyed another breakfast, but this one was extra special as the every famous and most delicious blood oranges were made available to them to enjoy.

Once again, thanks to our guide we had a private boat to take us to the island in Venice that specializes in the ancient art form of glass blowing. Our guide told us that the art form of making of Venetian glass mirrors was kept secret for decades. The penalty was death for divulging any information with regards to this exquisite craft. Of course this lead to lengthy discussions on whether some art forms are considered ‘art’ or ‘craft’.

The boys were entranced as these master craftsmen did a demonstration for them. They are brilliantly skilled as it takes them ten to fifteen years to become a master. Your sons marvelled at the way a form would take shape at such high temperatures. Before their eyes the master ‘pulled’ a glass horse from a ball of glass. A celebration to be sure, his abilities were effortless and they enjoyed every moment!

Today’s mask-making and Commedia dell’Arte workshop was absolutely and unforgettably magnificent! “Tragi comica”, located in the heart of Venice, is filled with the most intricate and masterfully designed masks imaginable. This family of mask-making masters has spent years creating and working with the authentic masks of the original Commedia stock characters. During our three hour workshop, the boys learned about the history of this unique style of theatre which is where the first improvised style of acting/performance originated in Italy in the fourteenth century. We were then treated to a performance by one of the famous local Commedia performers. He had the boys performing the authentic gestures of the traditional Arlecchino character – the bear and the cat! It was fabulous to see the boys performing in the middle of a beautiful sun filled piazza! Then we came to the part of the workshop that we’d all been greatly anticipating… the mask-making!! Each of the boys selected their own unique base mask shell which they then transformed using their imaginations (and a whole lot of paint, braid, glitter, feathers and ribbon) and created the most incredibly wonderful masks. They worked masterfully in the studio; so much so that the owners/coordinators of the workshop took time at the end to tell us that our group was the best one they have ever had the pleasure of working with! No kidding. The boys blew us all away today, as they have everyday of our amazing adventure, with their enthusiasm, interest and keenness to participate with unbelievable gusto… and I’m not referring only to their gelato consumption!!

Day 6 Venice - Oh my gosh!!!

…we have left the back drop of Firenze in all its glory where your sons mastered the art of bargaining for leather, accessories, and the joy of bartering for umbrellas! You can be so proud of your sons using the Italian that they know, connecting with those people that are new to them, and you can be sure that they have become superb managers of their financial empires.

…our art, music, and drama stars have travelled by bus through the stunning country side of mountains, fog, and snow! We found amusement in seeing a hedge hog, a most beloved dog being walked in a stroller, and country villas that would take your breathe away.

…at each bus break your sons are filling ‘both legs’ with more pasta, pizza, and chocolate. The smiles are wide and the laughter his hearty. It is so wonderful to see them organize themselves and make the most of their experiences here in Italy.

…the arrival to Venice is magical: the country roads are narrow with pin turns. We get the chance to take in the country side which is a unique experience: fruit trees and burst of sun rays that light up the villas. One villa after another along the road side are characteristic to this region and we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to stay in one. The name of our hotel is ‘Hotel Park’.

…the bus takes us through a most narrow wrought iron gate, and we are greeted with a formal garden and statues: a heavenly arrival. The terrazzo floor has an incredible shield inlay which is light up by the Venetian glass chandeliers.

…how fantastic is it to be in a city where you have the option to take a boat to the airport! This is the kind of beauty that enraptures the heart and soul: no cars in the heart of the city, and to cross the ‘road’ one has to take a boat! Fortunately, the boys had the experience of taking our coach to the water taxis, and from their travelling to the Rialto Bridge in three water taxis with their instruments!

…the church that awaited our arrival was near the Rialto Bridge: how fantastic is that! To be thirteen years of age, and performing in a building that was built in the 14th century, with a ‘Titian’ as their backdrop is too fantastic! The name of the church was called Chiesa di S. Giovanni Elemosinario. The concert was wonderful as was the crowd; many visitors came in to take in your boys in action.

Half way...5 more days. How can it get any better..

Today we walked from 830 Am to 830 PM. We saw almost everything you could see in Florence in a day. The boys even had a bit of free time to shop.

Lunch for some was a pizza, for some pasta and for others...you guessed it, gelato.

The weather has been wet again so the later part of the day was a bit chilly.

The Ponte Vechio was one destination and the Uffizi gallery another. The statue of David was still standing and the boys were amazed by his size. Today's dinner was a fantastic primo pasta and chicken for the secondi. (the second course) Everyone is eating everything...

Tomorrow we travel to the great city of Venice and prepare for our final concert. I hope we don't drop anything in the water..We have to take the instruments to the concert site by boat..Cross your fingers.

Florence...WOW! It's amazing!

Firenze….What a beautiful city. We arrived Saturday at 1PM. A quick drop off of instruments and luggage at the hotel and we were off to lunch. Our first visit in Florence was the Duomo. 465 steps the top. As you can see by the pictures it’s amazing up there.. We continued on with the day walking around the Piazza San Giovanni and Piazza del Duomo.. Around 5 PM we returned to the hotel for dinner. The boys prepared for the third concert and we walked to the church. All the big instruments went in taxi’s. Oh ya.. I forgot to tell you.. The bus can’t drive in the city centres.. So we have been walking everywhere and carrying the instruments to the concert sites. The concert was fantastic and I am not sure how the next one is going to be any better. The boy’s played their hearts out.

Pompeii Uncovered....What a day!!

Today we travelled back in time - approximately 1929 years to be exact! Remarkably, it only took us four hours to get there!

We departed from our hotel on what started out as another chilly, overcast and raining day here in Rome. Well fed and all still fighting the effects of jetlag, it wasn’t long before the long stretch of the Autostrada and the gentle hum of the bus got the better of us and all, save the bus driver, fell fast asleep. The snoring quickly subsided when our tour guide, Rene, announced that we were approaching Naples and in moments would be in Pompeii. To our great delight the sky parted and for the first time, since we landed, we saw and felt the beautiful warm rays of the Italian sun! Our bus driver, Salvatore, being Neopolitan took credit for the sudden change in the weather!

The entrance of Pompeii is surrounded by a small market of souvenir stands, orange & lemonade stands and several pizzerias. With the triumphant Mount Vesuvius standing proud just nine miles away, the sight of the old crumbled city columns and outer walls as we ascended the pathway leading up to the main entrance, immediately transported us back to this unique time and place. We met our tour guide, Guytano, at the entrance and knew from his charming and enthusiastic greeting that we were all in for fabulous tour. Our intuitions about our energetic guide were correct! In two hours, he wove historical facts with stories and amusing trivia to paint us a picture of Pompeii that we won’t ever forget. Unbelievably preserved bath houses, family homes, painted frescos and original style cobble-stone streets helped to fill in the gaps of what our imaginations were creating of this once thriving and prosperous city. In listening to Guitano’s stories of how the city was constructed we quickly discovered that so much of our constructive technology today is founded upon the ingenuity and innovation of the Romans. Walking along the streets looking into what are now a collection of fragile ancient marble, stone and brick wall remains, it wasn’t difficult to imagine the shops and homes that once stood there filled with Roman merchants and families. The photos from today reveal just a glimpse of this once vital city, but the knowledge we learned and the pictures we created in our imaginations tell the real story. We were humbled, to say the least, by the experience of seeing this stunningly well preserved city and learning about the life and times of people who once walked where we were now walking.

Today, for many of us, was the highlight of our Italian adventure so far with respect to seeing the sights. The mood on the bus ride back to Rome was joyous and energized with the boys retelling stories of the different buildings they saw within the ruins. Filled with pizza and yet more gelato, this was indeed a day the boys won’t soon forget.

We have been utterly spoiled by the delicious Italian food we have been enjoying for our dinners each evening. Tonight was no exception. We dined at Mr. Volpe’s favourite family run Italian restaurant named, L’Aquila D’Oro, which Chris Pitfield was cleaver enough to figure out means Golden Eagle!

Tomorrow we depart bright and early for Florence, where we will be climbing the Duomo, performing at Santa Maria Maggiore in the evening and you guessed it… enjoying more gelato! Amore and Ciao for now!

Day 2... Another fantastic day..

Greetings from Italy… all your boys have dazzled and delighted the locals from Vatican City to Rome. Your sons have been admired for their talents and superb manners everywhere on their travels.

Vatican City was an amazing experience… the boys could identify Doric, Ionic, and Corinthians columns effortlessly and loved the masters works of art in the Vatican. The Sistine Chapel was indeed a highlight for them today… Our guides have connected with the boys and have enriched the works of art so that they could put their experience in to context.

Needless to say, the food has been a delightful experience… pizza, pizza and more delicious pizza… A few of your sons have discovered the joys of having dessert first: gelato is on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

The boys had two amazing concerts today: you would have been proud! The first, at an International english school in the heart of Rome… it was outside, if you can imagine! The second brilliant performance was in St. Paul’s church… which had the most remarkable tesserae that I have even seen! In laymen’s terms, they were mosaics. One of the couples in the audience were Crescent parents of a student who graded several years ago and recognized our logo while we were at the coliseum: how fantastic it was to have them join us. So your sons were playing under frescos of angels and saints which was so inspiring, and in a church that had acoustics that enhanced their commitment and talents!

Well we are here.... Everyone made it safe. All our instruments and luggage arrived as well. Our first day has been fantastic. Gelato, pasta, walking and site seeing was the routine for our first day in Rome. Day two will see us performing two concerts and saying hi to the Pope..If he's at home..It's 1045 Italy time and I am tired, the boys are sleeping..I think? and the staff are snoring. I am going to bed now. So far...Fantastic! Ciao from Roma!

Daily Organization – Italy Arts Tour 2008

Prepare yourself at the start of the day before you leave the hotel for the entire day/evening ahead. Use the checklist below as a guide on what to make sure you have before setting out for the activities planned for each day. A daily checklist will be given to you to paste into your journal closer to our departure date!

Daily Organization Checklist
Tour Jacket
Appropriate clothing for the weather – dress in comfortable layers that you can easily remove if you get too hot or add if you are cold.
Bank Card or money (maximum 50 Euros per day – we are NOT suggesting that you spend this amount everyday as on most days there will only be the occasion to purchase lunch approximately 10 Euros.)
School uniform if we will be performing that day (we will notify you the evening before)
Hip sack or travel pack to hold a pen, journal, camera, gum, sunglasses, lip baum, etc.
Ipods and electronic games/dvd players are NOT permitted to travel with you during our days of touring with the exception of our long bus trip days (we will notify you of those days the evening before)

Safety and awareness
It is very important to be aware of yourself and your surroundings when traveling. Be aware of your belongings and the proximity of those around you. It is very easy to get distracted by the new sights and sounds around you, so you must remind yourself to be conscience of your surroundings. Use the buddy system especially when shopping. This means that you look out for your partner when he is taking his money out to pay and he does the same for you in return.

Travelling as a group in public places
The streets in Italy are generally very narrow and the cars can travel at break neck speeds. The traffic rules and signs are different then in Toronto so it is essential that you look in all directions and listen for instructions from your teachers and tour guides before crossing streets or piazzas. It is always best to walk in pairs rather then large groups. This will allow other citizens to manoeuvre easily around us.

Shopping in pairs is also strongly recommended as many of the stores in Italy are small boutique style and are not designed to accommodate huge groups of people at once. Take turns visiting the shops in pairs. This will also enable you to have a better look around the shops.

Etiquette in restaurants and public places
All of the museums, galleries, theatres, cathedrals, and restaurants we will be visiting are open to the public. Our group will be among many others who have come to enjoy these places of interest. This means that it is essential for you to be aware that others deserve an equally wonderful experience and not to crowd around statues, paintings, etc. which would make it difficult for others to see.
What does this look like?
Ø Be respectful of others around you. They have also paid money and perhaps traveled great distances to see the sights of Italy too.
Ø Do not crowd around entrances, statues, displays etc. as this will obstruct the view of others.
What does this sound like?
Ø Use quiet, indoor voices when we are touring public galleries, theatres, museums, etc.
Ø Be silent or whisper very quietly when we are visiting churches and cathedrals as a sign of respect for the sanctity of these places of worship.
Ø When we are dining in public restaurants be respectful of the other patrons by speaking quietly to those guys sitting at your table. Do not yell out to guys sitting at other tables.
Ø Stay seated when we are dinning at restaurants. We do not want to get in the way of the wait staff serving us the delicious food!

Using electronics when traveling
Listening to your Ipod, watching a movie on a portable dvd player, or playing a game on your portable PS2 while wearing headphones, are all excellent ways to pass the time when we are travelling on our long flight to and from Italy (9 hours).

These devices will also come in handy on our bus journeys from Rome to Pompeii (4 hours), Rome to Florence (4 hours), Florence to Venice (4.5 hours) and Rome to Verona (9 hours).

You may also wish to use these devices in the evenings when you are in your room at the hotels.

Please note that NO electronics are permitted to leave the hotel or bus on a daily basis when we are out touring the cities and performing. If these are found on your person, they will be confiscated by one of your teachers who will return it to you at the end of the trip.

If something gets lost or left behind this is entirely your responsibility. It is best not to bring anything to Italy that is irreplaceable (i.e. expensive jewellery, watches, or electronics.)

Most people complain about the lack of sun, the cold weather and the fact that summer is so far away. The Arts team doesn't have any time to even think about complaining....Passport information, airline manifests to complete, tour journals and jackets to order. It never ends. Friday January 25th the tour group took half of the lunch period for a promo picture. This picture will grace the concert venue walls in Italy. Before we realize it we will be landing in Toronto. The trip over and only the memories left...Let's make it last..

Well get ready!!! 30 boys 3 staff off to Italy...There is no turning back now.. All the paper work is done, the flights are booked and hotels reserved. The band is preparing, actors acting and artists creating. This is my first post in a while and I intend to post on a regular basis..Check back frequently and enjoy the ride...
